This Touching Story Of A Mother's Promise To Her Son Will Bring A Tear To Your Eyes!
(Short Story By Raju Kakarlapudi)

Today was the most awaited day of my life. My son was graduating today. He was my sole strength and weakness. He woke up with a deep sigh as though he did not want the day to begin. He got ready in a jiffy. Being his mother I was all excited to see him receive the prestigious piece of paper in that black robes. We left to the college. Inside the hall, he kept a seat vacant next to him. His friend who passed by him asked him the reason for it. My son said that the seat was for me. The friend hugged him tight, both seemed unwilling to let go off the hug. Soon the program started.

The time arrived, he walked up the stage and I could not sit down. I beamed up. I screamed, I cheered, I did all that I can to see that zillion dollar smile. He raised his certificate and pointed it to me. I exclaimed to the crowd that he was my son, I repeated those words again and again at which point the auditorium roared heavily. He came down. Children congratulated each other and left the place gradually. We went to a park close by, he sat there, filled his palms with his face and cried. He cried and cried but never stopped.

At one point in time when we were discussing about the fact that we two were the only ones left in this world for each other, I told him that he would definitely find someone with whom he would spend the rest of his life. He seemed not to agree with my point at that time. He told that the plural of the word parent never existed in his life and asked me for a promise. I gave it to him. I told him that I would be with him till the end of time. He was comforted with my promise. I assumed that he did not understand the meaning of the words, 'till the end of time'. He was probably too young to realize it.

He continued to cry. He spoke looking at me. He reminded me of the promise that I gave him. He said that I failed. I lay my hand on his head. I said it's not the way he thinks. I combed through his thick, madly grown hair. I asked him not to worry and tried to get him out of his mood. I asked him if he was planning to cut his hair at all. I told him that I never broke my promise. As I said that, I bent unto him and wiped his hair off his brow and kissed him. As I kissed him, tears filled my eyes. I pitied my tears, they always formed, but never trickled down my face to the ground, they never existed. Unlike mine, his tears kept trickling down his cheeks. There was no one around to wipe them away.

He cried for some more time and gradually stopped. He added saying that he would never break his promise unlike me. He promised me on the day when he saw me for the last time, that he would carry on in his life with or without me, come what may. He wiped away the tears, stood up and rode his way to the saloon on his bike. I waited in the park. I thought I will directly reach home. I was too shy to be with him even in the saloon. I did not know how he understood that I asked him to cut his hair!
