Bhairavakona is a holy place situated in the heart of Nallamala Hills in the Prakasam district district of the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh. This place is home to an ancient Shiva temple. There is a waterfall which falls from a height of 200 metres
History of the Temple Lord Shiva is presented in the form of Kala Bhairava, so this this place is called as Bhaiaravakona. Another saying is there that that a shepherd named Bhairava Kondaiah from neighbouring village used to feed his cattle in this region. After some time, his flock increased in thousands and the water in that region fell short. Then his flock began to yell for water. Kondaiah by seeing his cattle's distress went to the spring took bath in it and prayed to god that he would sacrifice his head if the thirst of the cattle was slaked.
Immediately with his prayers plenty of water began to spring up from the spring and the flock quenched their thirst. Then Kondaiah went to his village and informed about this miracle to all his relatives and friends and returned to that spring with all offerings to worship the God. After the feast all went back to home but Kondaiah stayed back at the spring to show his gratefulness to god. As his prayers were fulfilled, he hung himself to a branch of a tree by tying his hair to it and hewed his head with a sword. Later his relatives started searching for him and came to that place and were shocked to see his dead body. Then they buried the body with head in a stone near the spring and thus from then the stone became the place of worship over there.
After the death of Kondaiah, his grave made with stone became the place of worship for all the devotees. Even today one can find plenty of water flowing out from that spring continuously. Thus Bhairavakona became famous.
This Temple was built on a single rock during the period of 600-630 AD by Pallava ruler Mahendra Varma. In the 7th and 11th centuries this temple was renovated by Chola rulers. 101 shiva lingas was carved here. This is the only temple where Lord Bramha, Lord Vishnu and Lord Maheswara are worshipped in one place. There is a separate shrine of Goddess Durga Devi. An interesting feature is that Moonlight falling on the idol of Goddess Durga Devi on the day of Karthika Pournami and Maha Shivarathri which attracts devotees.
8 temples of Lord Shiva here which are carved here. The 8 forms of Lord Shiva are Shashinaga, Rudra, Visweswara, Nagarikeswara, Bhargeswara, Rameswara, Mallikarjuna, Pakshamalika Linga. Out of which 7 shrines faces towards east direction and remaining one on north direction.
