As much as the birth of social media has helped us in reducing huge distances between friends and helping to meet new people, the issues it has raised are also equally problematic. Apart from the trolls and judgemental people that are the majority on Facebook, the issues of photo privacy has been a constant problem girls have to deal on a regular basis. Despite making our profiles private from strangers, the miscreants of the social media are still able to download or take a screenshot of the pictures without any prior permission and completely misuse them.
Despite the installation of several cyber cells and laws regarding online harassment, Facebook has been facing several complaints about these wrongdoings. As a first step to curb this problem, the Facebook team has developed a new feature called “Profile Picture Guard” where the option of downloading or taking a screenshot of the profile picture is completely disabled. This feature will also prevent strangers from tagging themselves or others on the protected profile picture.
Currently Facebook has developed this for Andriod phones while it is being developed for other platforms like iOS, Windows. The profile pictures will be highlighted with a blue border once the user activates the feature. Good news is that Facebook has decided to introduce this feature on a test basis in our country first. We are happy to know about this feature as it helps a great extent to stamp out the online harassment women are facing on such a large scale. We hope the feature will be rolled out to other platforms as soon as possible.
