Eating habits have changed drastically in India Today. Gone were the days when we had healthy home cooked food every day of the week. Food available today is anything but healthy. Unscrupulous individuals are currently flooding the market with a range of adulterated everyday household products in a bid to make an easy buck. These low-quality products are playing with our health in ways we don’t even realize.
1) Ghee: Ghee which is used in the making of sweets and other delicacies is adulterated with low-quality Vanaspathi and animal bone oil.
Hazardous Effects: It leads to blockages in the arteries leading to heart strokes.
2) Milk: Adulteration of milk is done with urea, detergents and chemicals like Benzoic acid. Adulterated milk will be soapy in nature and turns yellowish when it boils.
Hazardous Effects: Eye, liver and Kidney problems and even cancer.
3) Oil: Oils like Mustard, Sunflower, Palm which we use commonly in our houses is being adulterated with Oil made from animal carcass and fat. Food made of this oil would be sticky, to the palm and palate.
Hazardous Effects: Loss of eye sight, heart problems
4) Ginger-Garlic Paste: The Ginger-Garlic paste is normally adulterated with a cheaper quality of ginger and garlic is mixed with onion and potato paste.
Hazardous Effects: Diarrhea, Stomach disorder
5) Tomato Sauce: Tomato sauces mostly used in local fast food centers are also artificially made from ‘pumpkin pulp’, ‘sugar’, ‘non-edible' colors and flavors. No tomatoes are actually present in that sauce which helps maintain its cheap rate in the local market.

6) Catfish: It is also known as killer fish. Many of the fish recipes which you consume in the hotels and restaurants today might be catfish. The use of this fish for consumption is banned by Government of India.

7) Sweets: Adulteration of sweets is done with the non approved food colors and artificial sweetening chemicals.
Hazardous Effects: Diarrhea, Carcinogen
8) Honey: Honey is often adulterated with Molasses sugar to increase the bottle's quantity. According to a study carried out by the Center for Science and Environment, most honey brands being sold in the country contain varying amounts of antibiotics.
Hazardous Effects: Liver damage, Blood and stomach disorders
9) Fruits: Calcium carbide is used for the artificial ripening of fruits which is banned by the government as artificial ripening renders the fruits unfit for human consumption.
Hazardous Effects: Diarrhea, Ulcer, Permanent eye damage
Adulteration is rampant in-spite of several corrective measures adopted by the governing bodies. How do we then ensure that we don't fall prey to the deed of these crooks.
