While most of us were busy sharing memes on April 1, a Hyderabad Traffic Cop did something wise that most of us don’t even care about. The man of the hour is Kukatapally Traffic PS Home Guard B.Gopal. A photograph of Gopal feeding a homeless woman has been doing rounds on Twitter for the past two days.
Clicked near Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), the viral photo shows Gopal feeding a homeless woman with his own hands. His act is now being praised by fellow cops and netizens on the microblogging site. Even Cyberabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar and Home Minister Nayani Narsima Reddy praised Gopal for his gesture. The selfless act of kindness was first shared on Twitter by Harsha Bhargavi, chief public relations officer to Telangana DGP.

On Sunday, home guard B Gopal, who was on duty at the junction near Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Kukkatpally, saw the extremely helpless older woman, Buchamma, who was lying on the side of the road, looking exhausted. Moved by how helpless she looked, Gopal got breakfast for her. Not stopping there, he went on to feed her with his own hands.
Speaking to a popular media house, Gopal said, “I saw Buchamma (lying on the road side) in a very bad shape. She seemed extremely exhausted. I immediately knew the reason; she was hungry. Since she wasn’t in a position to even lift a finger, I fed her.” He added that he had seen Buchamma almost every day, and made some effort to interact with her. “Five months ago, Buchamma was hit by a vehicle. We took her to the hospital then and took care of her. Ever since then, she is quite close to the department people who are on duty near the junction. She has nine children, but all of them abandoned her. I hope that at least one of them will come in search of her and take her home,” he added. Buchammaha has now been sent to a welfare home in Cherlapally.
Earlier, we've seen a similar case, where Sai Reddy, a Home Guard officer with Malkajgiri traffic, performed the duty of civic administration. On Ugadi, while everyone were celebrating the holiday with their respective families, he took a spade and started filling potholes at JJ Nagar in Neredmet area of Hyderabad. Though some have an 'opinion' about traffic cops, we need to remember that they do serve the people and, hopefully, instances like these might change the perspective about them.
