The literal meaning of the word 'Pushkara' is nourishment. According to ancient legends, a brahmin who performed severe penance obtained a boon from Lord Shiva that he would live in holy rivers and purify them. This brahmin came to be known as 'Pushkara' or the one who nourishes. According to lore, once every 12 years, Pushkara travels from one holy river to the other. This movement is done in accordance with the zodiac calendar when Brihaspati traveled from one zodiac to another.
Krishna Pushkaraalu, that occurs once in 12 years, happens during the entry of Brihaspati into Kanya rashi. Devotees believe that taking a dip in these waters on occasion of pushkaraalu will wash away all your sins. The Krishna Pushkaraalu will be held for 12 days beginning on 12th August - 23rd August. It is also said that taking a dip in these waters improves your mental and physical abilities.
The Pushkaraalu is celebrated in Guntur, Krishna, Prakasham and Kurnool districts mainly. However, Vijayawada in the Krishna district is one of the main places for celebrations.
