Tamil cinema is synonymous for extremely realistic films. On the other hand, we also have the outrageous hyperbolic films that take larger-than-life to an all new level. The Tamil industry is a perfect of blend of all kinds of movies. There is no mainstream and independent movies in Tamil. If you have great content then your film is mainstream, period. Here's looking at some of the more extraordinary works in cinema produced on the Tamil Screen. (Note: This is my personal opinion. Also, most of these are films that were not dubbed into Telugu or remade, barring a couple of exceptions.) I hope you will agree with most of the films on this list.
1. Irudhi Suttru (2016)Madhavan! Madhavan! Madhavan all the way! This movie tells the tale of a disgraced former boxer who is now coaching the girls boxing team of India, all the while battling the pathetic politics that cloud Indian sport. He finds his life's purpose when he comes across a fisherwoman/prodigal boxer. He takes it up on himself to coach this girl to glory. The girl falls for the handsome coach in the process.
2. Iraivi (2016)
Easily my personal favorite. At first, this movie appears to be the story of three friends who are looking to make a quick buck to end their fiscal troubles. However, there are a lot of things hidden in sub-text. Beautiful and very real emotions, hard not to get involved in the lives of the protagonists.
3. Tharai Thappattai (2016)
Out and Out Bala film. Painful reality is much stranger than any imagined fiction. This film highlights the trials and tribulations faced by a struggling bunch of folk dancers who practice the art of karagattam. Sasikumar gives a decent performance. The films true hero is the story. Illayaraja's magical score is truly captivating.
4. Visaranai (2016)
Based on a true story. The film is an excellent commentary on police brutality. It details the life of three daily wage laborers who get themselves caught in someone else's cat and mouse game. Very real and very raw.
5. Papanasanam (2015)
Remake of the Malayalam hit Drishyam. This one has been remade in almost every language there is. However, this one is particularly special due to Kamal. His endearing accent and his portrayal, the way he treated this character deserves all the applause!
6. Indru Netru Naalai (2015)
A science fiction comedy flick. This film is about a pair of good for nothings who stumble upon a time machine. They decide to use the time machine for their own ends. Things don't go exactly as planned as one of their time adventures brings a dreaded criminal back from the dead.
7. Orange Mittai (2015)
If you haven't seen 'The scent of a woman', you will surely enjoy this one. A paramedic is forced to deal with an, grumpy mean old man who doesn't really have anything to do in life. One more example of 'the journey being much greater than th destination,
8. Jigarthanda (2014)
A dark comedy. This film follows the misadventures of an aspiring director who looks to make a film detailing the life an underworld criminal. Things a turn for the worse when the don decides to act the part of the protagonist himself.
9. Goli Soda (2014)
A coming of age film of sorts, this film is about a group of teenaged misfits who decide to take on the local rowdy who is terrorizing their colony. A tale of how friendships and honesty will eventually beat every obstacle.
10. Vaayayi Moodi Pesuvom (2014)
A crazy rom-com film, this movie is about a new virus that has suddenly gripped the town of Panimalai. The "Mute-Virus" is causing victims to suddenly lose their voice, sometimes even killing them. This virus spreads by speaking and thus forces a ban stopping people from speaking to each other. The inhabitants of the town eventually adjust to this ban on speaking until a cure is invented.
11. Cuckoo (2014)
Attakatthi Dinesh shows you why he is the guy you should watch out for in this film. Cuckoo is about a visually challenged couple and the various ups and downs that they go through in their life. Eventually, they discover true love in each other.

12. Pisaasu (2014)
Quite a few of you might have seen the Telugu dubbed version of this supernatural drama. If you haven't then you've certainly missed out on a great cinematic experience. This is when paranormal stuff begins to happen at his house.
13. Kaaka Muttai (2014)
A national award winner this one. A heart-warming tale of two young boys who manage to grow out of a life of carefree happiness to understand how the world of adults works. Their quest to eat that delicious pizza teaches them all they need to know about life.
14. Soodhu Kaavum (2013)
Yes, this one was remade too. No, nobody saw the remake. This is Vijay Sethupathi at his best. Neat, balanced and very believable, he draws you into his world completely. You are so involved with what happens to Sethupathi, its almost as if you're right there next to him.
15. Kazhugu (2013)
Based on real-life incidents, this film is not for everyone. This is the story of 4 people who make a living retrieving the dead bodies from Kodaikanal's suicide point. Everything goes along normally until a local rowdy kills a few cops and dumps their bodies in this spot.
