A district unlike any other! I am kidding. Every place is special in its own way. What makes a place special? The people that live in it. That said, Nellore is that overachieving kid in school we all loved to hate. It is good at everything because it has everything: nature, history, religious diversity, great people and a greater future.

Here is a list of interesting things about Nellore!

1. Previously known as “Vikrama Simhapuri”, this city is famous for its production of paddy. The name Nellore too comes from the words ‘nel+oor’ which means paddy town in Tamil.

2. Nature is abundant in Nellore. Because of its proximity to the Bay of Bengal, it is blessed with many water bodies such as the Pulicat Lake and Penna River.

3. While Somasila dam is great to look at, Mypadu beach is where the party is.

4. Nellore is home for not just one but two famous bird sanctuaries: Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary and Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary. While the former houses flamingos, the later is filled with pelicans. Talk about versatility, ha?

5. This city underwent many kingdoms and was a witness to the decline of many said dynasties. It had been a part of Maurya Dynasty, Satavahanas, Kakatiyas, Pallavas, Cholas, Eastern Gangas of Kalinga Empire, Telugu Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara Empire, and Arcot Nawabs. To rub all her historical prominence in your face, the city houses two beautiful forts: Udayagiri fort and Venkatagiri fort.
