Meet The Lady Who Planted Trees Along 4KM Stretch & Took Care Of Them Like Children

If you've been active on the internet, you've definitely seen this photo of this old lady blessing the president of India.

Her name is Saalumarada Thimmakka, An environmentalist from Karnataka. She has planted 384 Banyan trees along a four-kilometre stretch of highway. Not just that, She has also planted 8000 more other trees in her life.

Why & When did it all start?

When she was in her 40's, She was unable to carry a child. That's when she, along with her husband, found solace and peace in planting trees.

Her Education:

She received no formal education and has also worked as a casual labor in a quarry.

Her Achievements:

Her work has been honoured with the National Citizen's Award of India.

A U.S. environmental organisation based in Los Angeles called Thimmakka's Resources for Environmental Education is named after her.

Recently, Her work was recognized by the Government of India and she was conferred with Padma Shri in 2019.

Why everyone should know about her:

Her name is Thimmakka. (Akka means elder sister). Called Salu Marada Thimmakka. (Saalu = In a line, Mara = Tree).

She & her late husband planted banyan trees for an entire four kilometre stretch in Karnataka, and took care of them like children in a relatively dry area. And dedicated her life for environment.

She received her Padmi Shri, barefoot. When was the last time you saw a Padma award received in barefoot? Exactly.

Imagine trees as wide as these for four km on either side of a road! Imagine watering them and protecting them from animals during early years. India should be ever grateful for such a noble soul as Saalumarada Thimmakka.
