Vizag! The city of destiny! Vizag is famed for its many beaches. Hundreds of people frequent the beach every day and that number goes up higher on the weekends. Who wouldn't love to take a refreshing dip in the salty ocean waters? Frankly, even if you are a great swimmer, it is not suggested to jump into the ocean, the strong tidal waves are strong enough to carry you deep into the oceans waters. With the heavy influx of youngsters frequenting the beaches, it is becoming a huge task to keep them in check. Often we hear media reports about youngsters who drowned in these waters. Recreation can be deadly too.
All that may become a thing of the past. Very soon Vizagites are going to experience India’s first sea pool. Saving lives is the main motto of the Government, this has driven their desire to make Vizag's beaches risk-free. The beaches of Vizag will soon get sea water pools, which will substantially lower the risk of drowning without taking the thrill of an ocean soak out of it.
What are sea water pools?
Sea water pools are elevated pools constructed on the beach with water filtered from sea. Popular in South Africa and the USa, the pools there are constructed to regulate the water temperature and protect people from shark attacks. The decision was taken in light of the recent drowning accident at RK Beach a couple of weeks ago, where five people drowned in the treacherous waters. With around 465 people drowning in the sea in the last 10 years, the district administration was propelled to take immediate measures to protect lives.
The four pilot projects would be located at Mangamaripeta, Lawson’s Bay, Rushikonda and Sagaranagar, which are considered to be safe for swimming, when compared to other beaches in the city. APTDC and GVMC engineers have been entrusted with the job of setting up sea pools, while the Tourism Department would fund the pilot projects.
So Vizagites be ready for India’s first sea pool and have a safe swim!
