Meet Supriya From Nizambad - The First Ever Loco Pilot Of Hyderabad Metro Rail!

Talk about women power and Hyderabad has all the examples for you. From hosting GES 2017 which has given more weightage to women this year to launching the Metro Rail that has largest women contingents in the country, women power is full on display. Here, Supriya Sanum, deserves a special mention. She is the Locopilot who steered the inaugural Metro Rail train that drove Prime Minister Narendra Modi, KCR, KTR, Governor Narsimham and other dignitaries on Tuesday. M Rajasekhara Chary from Hyderabad was the other locopilot of Train Number 15 that launched the Metro service in the city.

Hailing from Nizamabad, Supriya did her schooling and junior college education at Kakatiya Educational Institution. Breaking the 'common' notion, she took up Mechanical Engineering at Vignan Bharati Institute of Technology (VBIT) in Aushapur and did her M.Tech from Hyderabad's Chaitanya Bharati Institute Of Technology. Supriya had undergone rigorous training for 18 months with the Hyderabad Metro Rail. She holds the experience of completing 2,500 km of loco-piloting and also travelled in Bangalore metro train. Despite having an option to choose a career in software development, Supriya chose to work in core engineering field and this drew her to HMR to work as a loco pilot.

Surpiya is among the 35 women locopilots of the total 100 who were recruited by Metro Rail project. Most of the locopilots were recruited about two years ago and trained by experienced drivers. Besides Supriya, there are other women locopilots who deserve their bit of attention. These women have performance records on par with men. Locopilot K Sindhuja from Warangal has logged about 8,000km, while B Vennela from Mahbubnagar has driven for 3,000km. Supriya has logged in about 2,500km of Metro Rail run. Their training began 39 months ago in August 2014 between Nagole and NGRI and was later extended to Mettuguda.

Of more than 100 loco pilots of Hyderabad Metro Rail, 35 are women. With more women likely to join in, HMR will probably have the highest number of women crew on board as it commences operations.
