What were you doing when you were 17? This is the time when you were probably in the race to secure a seat in a good college. With a good education and only your future in mind, you were probably ready to reap the fruits of two years of hard work you put in studying your intermediate/10+2. Can you imagine taking out the time for anything else?
Meet 17 year old Sathvik Reddy, who is on a mission to restore eyesight to impoverished women. Sathvik interns with an international NGO where, a chance interaction with a blind woman opened his eyes to the plight of cataract affected. The woman's children had abandoned her as they were unable to bear her medical expenses. Sathvik has since decided to support the cataract treatment of a 100 women. He feels that losing ones eyesight for a mere couple thousand rupees is a huge loss.
Sathvik began an open crowdfunding campaign on "FuelADream" website. The campaign to restore the eyesight of a 100 cataract-affected poor women in Telangana has collected Rs 80,000 so far. According to a study in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal, women who use biomass based fuels for cooking are 45% more likely to develop cataract in comparison with women who used cleaner fuels.
