We are typical people. Our lives are very similar, be it the obsession towards Engineering and Medicine or the way we treat movies like a religion no matter what our background is. So, Chai Bisket’s team sat down and talked about things that happen and exist in our households and the points listed below are the basically all the times we went, “OMG, At my place too!” Thus this article! See if you are a part of the club!
1. Waking up to M.S. Subbalakshmi’s Suprabhatam/Vishnu Sahasranamam and later Vaaraphalalu on Bhakti TV, or Chaganti gari Sookthulu. *cue Oooomkaram music*
2. Inapa Godrej Beerawah often with stickers or magnets of Sai Baba or Lord Venkateshwara. If your family also has hoarding issues then you probably still have the Inapa trunk petti that your grandmom got from her puttillu on her wedding.
3. Your house will have One rokali banda, which you’ll never use except for ritualistic purposes or when dad suddenly remembers grandmom’s special rokali pacchadi.
4. Every room needs to have an calendar with a bunch of routine Gods. Also the Eenadu Telugu calender has the answer for everything. Any planning has to begin with “Calender teeskura”...
5. Big Jute Shopping Bag with Cane sticks to hold: I’m sure you have a couple of these lying around in the house. Typically used to carry the vegetables bought in the weekly trip to the Bazaaru.
6. We feel that when we purchase something, the cardboard that it comes in is just as important as the thing itself. You never know when we might have to shift!! So the atakas are filled with cardboard boxes of TVs and refrigerators.
7. Every Telugu household has a showcase, and every showcase has a Kondapalli bomma. Bonus points if you have those head bobbing fat aunty and uncle.
8. One trip to a pilgrimage every year; bonus points if it’s to Tirupati. Other favourites include Bhadrachalam, Srisailam, Annavaram, Yadagiri Gutta etc.
9. Yearly ritual of “ooragay putting” (true translation of Ooragay pettatam). A dry space in the kitchen or Pooja room is dedicated for these jaadilu.
10. Every meal ends with Perugannam. Even if you went out to have Chinese with the family, mom saves some rice just for perugannam. Perugannam is everything. You eat it so much that you either grow up to love it or completely hate it. There is no in between.
