Here's How You Could Spend Your Chilling Winter Weekend At 'Chikmagalur'

Chikmagalur, when I heard it for the first time I was like what is this place? When I Googled about it, I couldn't resist myself from going there. Located in the foothills of the Mullayanagiri range, the town with its favorable climate and coffee estates is a heaven for travel freaks. Without wasting any time we packed our backs and started to Chikmagalur.

Day 1

7:00 AM - Mullayanagiri Peak

Known for its peaceful ambience and nature's raw beauty, this peak is adorned with verdant grassland, rugged rocks, and a good trek path is also quite popular among adventure lovers. One can reach the peak by trekking or by road. The starting point of the trek is called Sarpadari and it is one of the difficult treks.With every step you take, the view gets more and more breath-taking. We can also reach to the peak point by car. And from their we have to climb up the steps to reach the highest point. There is one Shiva temple on the top of it. It serves as the highest peak perched at an altitude of 1930 m above the sea level.

1:30 PM - Jhari Waterfalls

Jhari Waterfalls, also known as Buttermilk Falls, is a beautiful waterfall situated near Attigundi. This falls is created by the springs generated in the mountains. A pool is formed by the waterfall below which allows visitors swim and play in the water. This is a perfect retreat from the busy city life. The Falls is located on a steep and rugged road down through private coffee plantations from the parking, which is about 4 km from the falls. There are few shortcuts which will make your travel distance less, try taking those to reach the falls.

Night Stay At Coffee Plantations

Chikmagalur, fondly known as the "Coffee Land of India", Chikmagalur is the first town to be planted with the coffee beans in India during the British rule. There are many home stays which offer us some pleasant night stays in coffee estates. Do not miss the walk though the plantations and knowing how the coffee is made. The sunrise through the lush green plantations is one of beautiful things you will ever witness in your life.

Day 2

9:30 AM - Bhadra River Rafting

The white water rafting experience at Chikmagalur is a pure adrenaline rush with level III rapids over a time of two hours.The camping ground consists of Igloo tents overlooking the Hanging bridge on the river Bhadra and the Anegudda Peak.

2:30 PM - Coffee Museum

Coffee Museum offers an interesting insight into the coffee business, from bean to brew. Their excellent documentary on the origins and growth of coffee in the region is worth sitting through.Coffee Museum is an interesting place and a must-visit for everyone who are traveling to Chikmagalur. The coffee quality evaluation and training center is also on the same premises as the coffee museum. The building itself is nestled in greenery and a short stairway leads you to the coffee encyclopedia.

How to reach? KSRTC is running many services from Bengaluru. The ticket price is Rs.251/-. Nearest Railway station is Hassan.

Accomodation? Stay near coffee plantations cost us more at peak times. Check out for best deals. There are few places which offers a good stay for 1000-1500 per head including food.

Budget If you are travelling in group by car it would cost around Rs.4000/- per head If you are planning to take public transport it would cost even less.
