Medak church is world famous. It is the largest church in all of Telangana. The Medak diocese is the single largest diocese in Asia and the second in the world after the Vatican.
The history of this church began in the year 1896, Rev. Charles Walker Posnett visited Medak and built a bungalow thereby staying in dock bungalow. Medak did not have railway connectivity those days. He traveled to Medak from Hyderabad on horseback. Posnett could do it in a day. There were about two hundred Christians in the Medak area. When he came to Medak, there was a small tiled house which was the place of worship.
As the Christians increased in that area, he felt the need for expanding the church building. Rev.Posnett soon raised a moderate structure on that very spot just enough for the Christian community within the Mission Compound in the traditional shape of a church. He thought it was not a worthy place for divine worship. He started building the present Cathedral in 1914 on a sprawling 1,000 acres of land...
The huge windows adorning the high walls of the church are done in a remarkable stained glass. They provide a spectacular view during daytime. No artificial light can re-create this magical scene. This is also the most fascinating feature that attracts scores of people to the church. For people who cannot read, the church also serves as a picture book on the holy Bible.
The window to the north of the church offers a canopy to the altar. This view is very fascinating. The scene reprises the assertion of Jesus towering above the altar, shrinking everything as Jesus ascends to heaven. The tiles of the historic church were imported from Italy and the roof has been cast to guarantee best acoustics. With its sheer size and beauty, this century-old Medak church stands out as one of the finest demonstrations of Gothic architecture in the country.
